P. E.

The Selborne scheme of work offers a coherently planned sequence of lessons to help teachers ensure they have progressively covered the requirements of the PE national curriculum, for both indoor and outdoor PE. In Key Stage One the focus of the PE curriculum is on the development of the fundamental skills that will be built upon in Key Stage Two when they are applied in specific sports. At Selborne, it is our intention to develop a lifelong love of physical activity, sport and PE for all young people.  We aim to ensure a positive and healthy physical and mental outlook in the future and to help pupils to develop essential skills like leadership and teamwork.  Within each lesson, we strive to give every pupil the opportunity to develop skills in PE, consider the impact on their health and fitness, compete, perform and to evaluate. These elements are always clearly identified both in lesson plans and on progression maps. All lessons are carefully differentiated which ensures that learning is as tailored and inclusive as possible. It is also our intention to ensure that every pupil has access to at least sixty minutes of physical activity every day.

We will teach pupils substantive knowledge.

Pupils will develop their knowledge of the importance of health and fitness. They will also learn the fundamental skills of a broad variety of sporting activities, as well as developing values and transferable life skills such as good sportsmanship, fairness and respect. They will learn to compete, perform and evaluate their performance and know how to improve.

We will provide pupils with opportunities to perform like a professional athlete.

Pupils are encouraged to act and behave like professional athletes. They will develop a good understanding of how to warm up and stretch effectively in isolation and also gain the confidence to lead the class.  Within lessons pupils will understand the necessary steps required to develop their own personal skill levels and also how to best work effectively as a team. They will have the opportunities to compete against each other individually and in their house teams.

We focus on effective teaching of topic specific terms and vocabulary.

Pupils will gain an understanding of sporting terms such as ‘good sportsmanship’, ‘teamwork’ and ‘respect’. They will also develop a familiarity with sport specific terminology like ‘attack’, ‘defend’, ‘dribble’, ‘snap’, ‘field’ and ‘bowl’. Along with this they will learn the vocabulary for position names in the main activities studied for example Netball and American Football including terms such as ‘quarterback’, ‘wide receiver’, ‘goal attack’, and ‘centre’. The variety of different sports on offer will help to enhance a much wider acquisition of vocabulary.

Our approach to PE extends beyond the confines of the curriculum; we aspire to lead our students towards healthy, active lives. By engaging in physical activities for sustained periods, students not only enhance their fitness levels but also develop habits that contribute to lifelong well-being.

Technical proficiency is a key focus in our program. We aim to help students develop techniques and improve their performance across a spectrum of sports. This not only enhances their skills but also cultivates a sense of accomplishment and self-improvement.

Teamwork is a crucial aspect of our PE curriculum. We aim to equip students with the ability to work seamlessly as part of a team, promoting cooperation, communication, and mutual support. Additionally, our program encourages problem-solving skills, whether tackled individually or collaboratively within a team context.
