Phonics - Read Write Inc

Early Years and Key Stage 1: Read, Write, Inc.

At Selborne we teach phonics and early reading using the Read, Write Inc. (RWI) scheme of work. Children in Reception and Key Stage 1 use the RWI ditties and books as part of Guided reading.

Year 2 children will use the ditty books alongside the ‘domain dogs’ to explicitly teach the KS1 reading domains. This style of guided reading will also be undertaken by those children in Key Stage 2 who did not pass the phonics screening or may need additional help with reading.

All children will be assessed using the RWI assessment half termly and guided reading will be carried out in cross year group, ability sets. The RWI ‘Books for Bags’ reading books children will take home will directly correlate with their level from the assessment and their guided reading set. The books that the children read and take home contain the sounds that they have been taught in school. This gives the children the opportunity to embed the sounds that they have learned and to read with fluency.

As multiple sets could be using the ditties, the titles within each level do not have to be read in order. When a child is reading yellow, blue and grey, all books within each level have to be read before moving onto the next level. There is an expectation that all children read these books daily.

You can find more information and useful videos for RWI below.

  • Children should not begin ditties until they are able to read them fluently. We do not want children repeating books year-upon-year.
  • Children who complete the Grey level will undertake RWI comprehension
